There is quote I like from an Irish painter of the early 1900's, Sir William Orpen. Orpen worked mainly in London and was a successful portrait painter. He said...

 “A painting well drawn is always well enough painted”.

​

In other words, if you draw well you should expect to paint well. This was never my experience. Despite drawing well, I always found my finished paintings to be stiff and lifeless. The more I labored on a painting the more overworked it became, losing it's freshness and vitality.

​

This wasn't an uncommon problem for the Old Masters either. There are writings from the 17th century, the Golden Age of European painting, that mention how the greatest masters were the ones who could repaint a picture many times, with the final painting showing no indications of retouching and laborious overworking.

​

After a lifetime of working and struggling with oil paint, I'm proud to say that my latest works have the freshness and naturalistic look that for decades I've been striving for.
